Couple confused over missing carrots in vegie garden

A couple has been left confused after digging up the carrots they thought they grew from seed.
The US locals shared the hilarious but common gardening mistake in a TikTok video.
Lia revealed she planted carrot seeds in that spot and watched the thick carrot top fronds “grow for months”, but when she dug them up there was nothing there.

“Is this not a carrot? What is it? … Doesn’t look like anything. Baby there ain’t nothing here. What is it supposed to be?” she asked before replanting it.
The plant is definitely a carrot as eagle-eyed TikTokers who watched the clip noticed that there are actually very tiny carrots at the end of each of the fronds.
“You can see the teeeeeniest carrot on it,” one said.
“I can see the baby carrot hanging on for dear life though,” another commented.

Vegie gardeners helpfully explained in the comments why the carrots grew so small that they were almost impossible to see.
And it’s an important tip for any beginner growing vegetables from seeds for the first time.
“They are carrots! You have to thin them as they grow though or they won’t be able to grow properly. That’s about 20 baby carrots that couldn’t grow,” one said.
“When growing carrots, you’re supposed to spread them out from one another so the root has space to grow. Because they’re so bunched up, they’ve had no space, and are sharing the same nutrients from the soil,” another explained.
“Next time just try to place only a couple seeds together in little finger-holes a few inches apart, and spread them apart if multiple grow in the same spot.”
When asked how she ended up with so many carrots growing in one spot, Lia explained that “a few slipped through my hand during the sowing process. I didn’t think it was a big deal”.
Like all gardening fails – which every gardener has, even if they’re experienced – Lia’s mistake is a good learning experience and reminder to thin seedlings.
